Gender Identity Disorder of Adolescence
Children normally discover their own sexuality as they develop. They watch, observe, and experiment with behaviors that match their own gender. Youngsters with a Gender Identity Disorder find that they do not seem to fit in their own bodies. They express that they would like to be or believe they are the opposite sex. They have an interest in cross-dressing. They pursue a past-time of games and activities that are stereotypically of the opposite sex, and strongly prefer playmates of the opposite sex. If the adolescents are gender identity disordered, then as they move towards adulthood they are likely to further emerge as either being lesbian, homosexual or trans-gendered. It is currently believed that trans-gender issues are primarily neurological in origin and that the male, for example, may have a brain with primarily female characteristics or visa-versa. While many options are open to individuals who are Gender Identity Disordered, the current trend is that they be supported while they determine rather than choose their identity. An array of professional and volunteer organizations are available for the individual and their family while they seek to figure out their identity and destiny.
