Medical Conditions and Preparation for Surgery

Children are subject to illnesses, injuries, medical conditions and at times impending treatments that may be extremely painful, debilitating or frightening. Counseling has been an extremely useful process in both helping the child prepare for a future medical event or assisting them to recover from a previous event. Their recovery time may be less and they may fully participate in their recovery with counseling. The goal of treatment is to help them accept the condition or event or at times to help them grieve and continue to find meaning when faced with a very serious medical outcome. Families are assisted in maintaining a close supportive meaningful relationship with a child while maintaining as much normality in life as possible.
